Hyaluronic acid is the ingredient people feel most confident about and are least precise about. It is in almost everything, it does something real, and nearly every claim printed alongside it goes one step further than the evidence does.
So let me put the entire mechanism in one sentence: it is a humectant, which means it holds water. Everything useful about it follows from that sentence, and so does every disappointment.
What it actually is
Hyaluronic acid is a long sugar chain that your body already makes in quantity — it sits in the dermis, in joint fluid, in the eye. It is extremely good at binding water. That is not marketing; it is a physical property of the molecule, and it is why the ingredient turns up in wound dressings and eye drops as well as in serums.
What matters for a bottle on a shelf is that the hyaluronic acid in it is not the hyaluronic acid in your dermis, and it is not going there. It sits on and near the surface, where it holds water in the outer layers of the skin. That is a smaller job than the copy usually implies, and it is a job worth doing.
The molecular weight question, answered properly
This is where most of the confusion lives, and it is one of the few places in skincare where the disagreement has actually been measured rather than argued.
Essendoubi and colleagues used Raman spectroscopy in 2016 to follow hyaluronic acid of different sizes into skin. The finding was clean: the smaller fractions, around 50 kilodaltons, were detectable in the deeper layers of the epidermis, while the larger ones — 130 kilodaltons and up — stayed in the upper stratum corneum. Size determines depth. It is not a claim, it is a measurement.
Pavicic's 2011 trial then asked whether that difference in depth shows up on faces. Seventy-six women aged thirty to sixty applied a 0.1 percent hyaluronic acid cream at one of five molecular weights — 50, 130, 300, 800 or 2000 kilodaltons — around the eyes, twice a day, for sixty days, against a placebo. All of them improved skin hydration and elasticity compared to the untreated side. Only the 50 and 130 kilodalton groups showed a statistically significant reduction in measured wrinkle depth.
Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. The low-molecular-weight enthusiasts are right that size matters for anything beyond surface hydration. And the effect they are right about is a roughness measurement after two months of twice-daily use on the thinnest skin on your face. That is a real result, and it is a small one.
The condition nobody prints on the box
Here is the part that decides whether hyaluronic acid helps you or quietly works against you, and it is not in the ingredient at all. It is in the room.
A humectant needs somewhere to draw water from. In humid air, it pulls from the air. In dry air — winter heating, an aeroplane, an office at eighteen percent relative humidity — the nearest available reservoir is the deeper layers of your own skin. Applied to a dry face in a dry room, with nothing sealed over the top, a humectant can leave the surface feeling tighter than before you started.
The fix is unremarkable and it works: apply it to skin that is still damp, and put something over it. A cream, an oil, anything occlusive enough to slow evaporation. The humectant holds the water; the layer on top stops it leaving. Neither does the job alone, and the serum is the half that gets the marketing.
If you have ever concluded that hyaluronic acid "does nothing for you", this is the first thing I would check. Not the brand, not the percentage. Whether there was anything on top of it.
What the percentage tells you
Less than you would think. Pavicic's trial used 0.1 percent and measured effects. Concentrations above about two percent tend to make a product tacky rather than more effective, and a formulation can carry several molecular weights at once, which no percentage on the front of a bottle will tell you. A number without a molecular weight is not information.
Jegasothy's 2014 study is worth naming for the opposite reason — as an example of the evidence base being thinner than the citations suggest. Thirty-three participants, eight weeks, open-label, no control group. Hydration went up. It is a perfectly reasonable small study and it is not the kind of thing that should be carrying the weight of a category.
What it is not doing
It is not filling anything in. The injectable fillers that share the name are a cross-linked gel placed under the skin by a needle, in volumes a cream never approaches. The word is the same. The procedure, the depth and the quantity are not, and a serum that borrows the association is borrowing it.
It is not building anything either. Hydrated skin looks smoother and behaves better because water in the outer layers changes how it reflects light and how it flexes. Stop applying it, and that goes away over days. Nothing structural has changed, and nothing was supposed to.
What I would do
Use it, expect hydration, and expect it to be conditional. Damp skin, something over the top, and a sober view of what a humectant is for.
If you want the ingredient for the wrinkle-depth finding rather than for comfort, look for a low molecular weight stated on the label, give it sixty days, and hold the same expectation the trial reported: a measurable change in surface roughness, not a change of face.
And if you are choosing between a hyaluronic acid serum and a decent moisturiser, and you can only have one, take the moisturiser. The humectant needs it more than it needs the humectant.
