I want to take one word apart, because it is doing work on a label that it has not earned, and because the people it misleads are usually the ones being most careful.
The word is natural. On a cosmetic label it has no regulated meaning. There is a voluntary technical guideline — ISO 16128, published in 2016 and 2017 — which sets out how a company may calculate a natural-origin index for its ingredients. It is a calculation method, offered for use, not a threshold anyone must clear and not a safety assessment. A product can be described as natural because a supplier applied that arithmetic, or for no stated reason at all.
So the word tells you where a molecule came from. It tells you nothing about whether your skin will tolerate it.
Plants are not neutral chemistry
A plant that cannot run away has to solve the problem of being eaten some other way. What it evolves instead is chemistry: compounds that deter, irritate, and sensitise. This is not a rhetorical flourish. It is the reason botanical extracts are pharmacologically interesting in the first place, and it is the reason a meaningful share of them are also allergens.
De Groot and Schmidt catalogued this in Dermatitis in 2016. Close to eighty essential oils have been documented as causes of contact allergy. Fifty-five of those had been patch tested in consecutive patients being investigated for contact dermatitis, and nine of them — laurel, turpentine, orange, tea tree, citronella, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, clove and costus root — produced positive reactions in more than two percent of those tested.
Two percent of a patch-test population is not two percent of everyone; these are people already suspected of having a contact allergy, so the figure runs high by design. It is still a list of nine ordinary, familiar, plant-derived things with a documented rate, and every one of them reads as reassuring on a label.
The oxidation problem, which is the interesting one
Here is the part that surprised me when I first read it properly, and the part that changes how I think about small bottles that live open on a shelf.
Limonene and linalool are terpenes. They are in citrus peel and lavender and a very long list of botanical extracts, and in their fresh state they are weak sensitisers. When they are exposed to air, they oxidise, and the hydroperoxides they form are considerably stronger ones. The allergen is not really the ingredient. It is what the ingredient becomes over time in contact with oxygen.
The German contact dermatitis network, the IVDK, patch tested 5,511 consecutive patients between July 2018 and December 2020 with the oxidised forms. Positive reactions came out at 3.1 percent for limonene hydroperoxides and 8.8 percent for linalool hydroperoxides.
Again: a clinic population, not the general public, and the number would be lower on the street. But 8.8 percent is not a curiosity, and it is measured against a molecule that appears on labels as lavender oil, as bergamot, as a pleasant note in something marketed for sensitive skin. Limonene and linalool are both on the European list of fragrance substances that have to be declared when they exceed set concentrations — which is why you can often find them, if you read to the end of the ingredient list.
What this does not mean
It does not mean synthetic is safer. That would be the same error facing the other way, and it is just as lazy. Synthetic ingredients have their own allergens, their own histories of restriction, their own reformulations after the data arrived. Origin is simply not the axis on which tolerability sits.
It also does not mean botanical extracts are useless. Some are well characterised and worth having. The point is narrower and more boring: the sentence "it is natural, so it is gentle" has no mechanism behind it, and the sentence "it is synthetic, so it is harsh" has none either.
And I am not asking anyone to fear an ingredient list. Most people use most of these things without incident, which is exactly why they are still in use. What I object to is a word that discourages the checking.
What actually predicts tolerability
Concentration, first — the same molecule at 0.1 percent and at 3 percent is not the same exposure, and the position of an ingredient in the list is a rough guide to which you are getting.
Formulation, second. What else is in the product, what the pH is, and whether an irritant is buffered by what surrounds it.
Your own history, third, and it outranks the other two. If a category has caused you trouble before, that is a better predictor than any claim on the front of a box. If you know you react to fragrance, the declared allergen names at the end of the ingredient list are the useful part of the label, and the word on the front is not.
Age and storage matter more than people expect, given the oxidation data. A citrus or lavender-heavy product that has been open on a warm windowsill for two years is chemically not the product you bought.
What I would do
Read the end of the ingredient list rather than the front of the bottle. Treat "natural" as a description of sourcing, which is what it is, and not as a claim about your skin, which it is not.
And if you are choosing a product specifically because your skin is difficult, the shorter the fragrance section of that list, the less there is to go wrong. That is not a purity position. It is arithmetic about exposure.
