Cleansing is the shortest step in a routine. Forty seconds on the face, then rinsed off and gone. That brevity is the reason people stop thinking about it, and it is also the reason the wrong choice is expensive: it is the only product you use that is designed to remove things, and it cannot fully distinguish between what you want removed and what was supposed to stay.
Almost everything I get asked about tight, stinging, reactive-feeling skin traces back to this step before it traces back to anything else. Not always. Often enough that I check it first.
What a cleanser is doing
A surfactant has a water-loving end and an oil-loving end. That is the whole trick: it lets oil and water associate long enough for the oil, and the dirt and sunscreen held in it, to be rinsed away.
The problem is that skin is also made of oil and protein. Ananthapadmanabhan's 2004 review in Dermatologic Therapy — still the clearest account of this — sets out the two mechanisms of damage. Surfactants can extract the lipids that hold the outer layer together, and they can bind to and swell skin proteins, particularly keratin. The swelling is why harsh cleansing feels tight fifteen minutes later rather than immediately. The skin took up water it cannot hold, and then it lost it.
The useful consequence of that paper is that mildness is a formulation property, not an ingredient property. Some surfactants are intrinsically harsher than others, but how they are combined, and what is deposited back as the product rinses, changes the outcome substantially. You cannot read this off an ingredient list with any confidence, which is inconvenient, and I would rather say so than pretend a list can be scored.
The pH argument, with the numbers
Skin sits acidic. Lambers and colleagues measured 330 people in 2006 and found an average surface pH of 5.12. When participants were asked to leave off all products and washing for twenty-four hours, the average fell to 4.93 — from which they estimated the untouched, natural value at around 4.7.
That number matters because the enzymes that let the outer layer shed properly, and the ones that build its lipids, work in that acidic range. Traditional soap runs around pH 9 to 10. It is not a small deviation.
Baranda's 2002 study is the one I keep coming back to, because it tested the products that specifically claim gentleness. They assessed cleansers marketed for dry and sensitive skin and found irritant response tracked with pH: the more alkaline the cleanser, the more irritation it produced. Products sold on a promise of mildness were not uniformly mild, and pH predicted which ones were not better than the marketing did.
So pH is a real variable and a legible one. If a brand states it, that tells you something. If it does not, a bar that lathers dramatically and leaves the skin squeaking is telling you anyway.
Squeaky is not clean
This is the single most useful sentence I know about this step. Squeaky is the sound of a surface with nothing left on it. Not just the sunscreen and the day's oil — the lipids too. That sensation is not thoroughness. It is a description of what was taken.
The target is skin that feels like skin afterwards. Not tight, not slippery, not needing something applied within ninety seconds to be bearable. If you find yourself racing to moisturise, the cleanser has set the pace.
The four things people overdo
The first is frequency. Evening cleansing has a job: sunscreen, makeup, the day. Morning cleansing often does not — you were asleep on a pillow. For many people, water alone in the morning is enough, and for skin that runs dry it is better than enough. This is worth two weeks of trying rather than an argument.
The second is temperature. Hot water accelerates lipid extraction, and it feels wonderful, which is why it goes unexamined. Lukewarm costs you nothing.
The third is duration and friction. Cleanser sits on the face long enough to work in well under a minute. Beyond that, and with a flannel or a brush added, the extraction keeps going after the cleaning is done.
The fourth is stacking. Double cleansing was developed for a specific problem — heavy, water-resistant sunscreen and long-wear makeup that a single water-based wash genuinely does not shift. If that is your day, it is a sound method. If you wore moisturiser and nothing else, the second cleanse is doing the damaging half of the job with none of the necessary half.
What that leaves you with
A cleanser that rinses without a fight, ideally at a stated pH somewhere in the four-to-six range, used once or twice a day depending on what is actually on your face, with lukewarm water and no equipment.
That is an unexciting specification and it is nearly the whole of it. There is not much upside available in this step — a cleanser cannot do a great deal for you in forty seconds — but there is meaningful downside, and avoiding downside is worth doing well.
What I would do
If your skin has been touchy and you want to change one thing, change this one, and change it alone so you can read the result. Give it two weeks. Two weeks is long enough for the outer layer to turn over and tell you something, and short enough that you will actually finish the experiment.
Then judge it by feel at the fifteen-minute mark, not at the sink. At the sink, harsh feels like clean. Fifteen minutes later, it stops pretending.
