Lemon, baking soda, vinegar: why DIY face peels backfire

The kitchen has acids and alkalis in every cupboard and no way of measuring either. What each of the three favourites actually does to the surface of your face.

Because a kitchen cannot control strength. Lemon juice is strongly acidic and turns phototoxic in sunlight. Baking soda is alkaline, far above the skin's natural pH of about 4.7. Household vinegar is 4 to 8 percent acetic acid and has caused documented chemical burns. A real peel is a known acid at a known pH for a known time.

I understand the appeal completely. The ingredients are already in the cupboard, they cost almost nothing, and the videos look convincing: a paste, a tingle, a rinse, a glowing face in good light. The trouble is that the tingle is the only part of that sequence anyone can actually feel, and it tells you nothing about whether the thing on your face is working or damaging the surface you are trying to improve.

So here is what each of the three favourites actually is, chemically, and what goes wrong with it.

Is lemon juice safe to put on your face?

Lemon juice sits around pH 2. That is in the same acidity range as a professional peel, but a peel is applied at a stated concentration for a timed number of minutes and then neutralised. Nobody measured the acid in the particular lemon you cut this morning, and two lemons from the same bag are not the same product.

The acid is not even the main problem. Citrus fruit contains furocoumarins, plant compounds that are harmless in the shade and become phototoxic when UVA light reaches them on the skin. The result has a name, phytophotodermatitis, and a nickname in emergency departments: the margarita burn. A 2022 case report by Nagireddi and colleagues describes a woman whose rash appeared within 24 hours of lime juice and a day at the beach, recurring summer after summer, and notes that the patches of darker or lighter skin commonly remain for months after the reaction itself has settled.

Which means the ingredient most often recommended online for dark spots is one of the more reliable ways to create new ones. Can you use baking soda on your face?

Baking soda goes wrong in the opposite direction. Dissolved in water it is alkaline, somewhere around pH 8 to 9, and your skin is not. Lambers and colleagues measured 330 people in 2006 and estimated the natural, undisturbed surface of the skin at about pH 4.7.

That acidity is not decorative. The enzymes that let the outer layer shed evenly and build its own lipids work in that acidic range. Push the surface several pH units in the alkaline direction and it takes time to recover, which is the same reason I spent a whole entry on why harsh cleansers leave skin tight fifteen minutes later. A baking soda scrub adds grit to the alkalinity, so it abrades and disrupts at once.

The smooth feeling afterwards is real. It is the feeling of a surface with the top of it scrubbed away, and it tends to be followed a day later by exactly the dryness and sensitivity people then try to fix with another product.

Is apple cider vinegar a safe toner?

Vinegar is the one with the clearest documentation of harm. Common household vinegars contain 4 to 8 percent acetic acid. Feldstein, Afshar and Krakowski reported in 2015 on a 14-year-old who had followed an internet protocol using apple cider vinegar to remove moles and arrived at their clinic with two erosions on her nose. Their point was blunt: weak acids can still burn, especially when they are left on or covered.

Diluted, splashed on and rinsed straight off, vinegar will usually do little either way. Soaked into a cotton pad and taped on overnight, or dabbed on repeatedly for a week, it is an uncontrolled acid treatment with no end point.

None of them has a controlled strength, a known contact time or a way to stop the reaction on purpose. That is the whole difference between a DIY peel and a formulated one. A cosmetic acid product states the acid, is made to a target pH, and is tested in that form. It can still irritate. But the dose is a decision rather than an accident.

It is also worth saying that "natural" is doing a lot of quiet work in these videos. I have written about why natural is not a safety category, and kitchen peels are the most literal example of it: food-grade is a standard for your stomach, not for the outer layer of your face.

Why do these trends keep spreading?

Because the videos that travel furthest are not the most accurate ones. Roland-McGowan and colleagues analysed the 100 most-liked sunscreen videos on TikTok in 2025. Seventy-four percent were positive about sunscreen, which sounds encouraging, but only 35 percent contained accurate information, and just 13 of the 100 were made by dermatologists. Their conclusion was that engagement was often unrelated to accuracy or educational quality.

That was sunscreen, where the underlying message is sound. For DIY peels, the underlying message is not, and the same mechanics apply: a dramatic texture, a visible reaction and a confident voice outperform a caveat every time.

What I would do instead

If what you want is smoother texture or brighter tone, use a product that was formulated for the job and states its acid, and introduce it slowly: two or three evenings a week, never on broken or irritated skin, and not the same night as other exfoliation.

Whatever you use, wear sunscreen the next morning and use enough of it. Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to light, and the amount on your face matters more than the number on the bottle, as I explained in how much sunscreen actually works.

And if you have already tried one of these and your skin is blistering, darkening in streaks, or still stinging after a day, stop and have it looked at by a doctor or pharmacist rather than layering something on top to calm it down.
