Almost every sunscreen question I get is about which one. Mineral or chemical, 30 or 50, this brand or that one. It is a reasonable question and it is very rarely the one that is costing people protection.
The number printed on the front of a sunscreen is generated in a lab under a standardised condition: the product is applied at 2 milligrams per square centimetre of skin. That density is not a recommendation printed somewhere in the small text. It is the condition under which the number itself was measured. Change the density and the number no longer describes what you are wearing.
What people actually apply
Petersen and Wulf reviewed the application studies in 2014 and the picture is consistent across decades and countries: real-world application tends to land somewhere around a quarter to a half of the tested density. Not occasionally. Typically.
This is not carelessness. Two milligrams per square centimetre is a genuinely large amount of product — visibly more than most people find pleasant on a face, and it is the reason so many sunscreens feel “heavy” when used properly. The formulation industry has spent twenty years making textures that people will apply, which is a real achievement, and it has not changed the physics of the film.
The part that surprises people
The intuition is that half the amount gives you half the protection. It does not. Faurschou and Wulf measured the relationship in vivo and found it falls off more steeply than proportionally — the protection factor drops roughly exponentially as the applied thickness decreases.
In practical terms: an SPF 50 applied at half density does not behave like an SPF 25. It behaves like something appreciably lower. I am deliberately not giving you a single conversion number, because the exact exponent varies between products and studies and anyone quoting you one clean figure is being tidier than the data.
The direction is what matters, and the direction is not gentle.
So what does that mean for the number on the bottle
It means the gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is much smaller than the gap between applying properly and applying the way most of us do on a Tuesday morning. If you are choosing between two products and one of them is a texture you will genuinely use enough of, that one wins — even at a lower number.
This is the closest thing to a hack in this whole subject: the best sunscreen is the one you will over-apply rather than under-apply, and that is a texture question, not a chemistry question.
How to get closer to the tested amount
The two-finger guideline — a line of product along the length of your index and middle finger, for face and neck — is the most common rule of thumb. I use it, with one caveat: it was derived for average adult faces and average product densities, so treat it as a floor rather than a measurement.
Two things that work better than trying to be precise:
- Apply in two passes. A layer, then a minute, then a second layer. This gets you closer to the tested density without ever having to apply an uncomfortable amount at once, and it fills in the patches that the first pass missed.
- Do the edges deliberately. Hairline, ears, the sides of the neck, the strip in front of the ears. These are the places that are consistently missed, and they are not missed because people forget — they are missed because that is where a hand naturally stops.
Diffey made the case in 2001 for an early reapplication — within the first half hour of exposure — rather than treating reapplication as a strictly two-hourly clock. The reasoning is that the second coat is compensating for the under-application of the first, and it does more good early than late.
What I will not tell you
I will not tell you what your skin needs, and I will not tell you that any sunscreen prevents a specific outcome. Photoprotection is one of the very few areas in this field with genuinely strong long-term evidence behind it, and precisely because that evidence is good, it does not need me to embellish it.
I also will not tell you that mineral is safer than chemical, or the reverse. That argument has consumed an enormous amount of oxygen for a difference that, in terms of the protection you actually get, is much smaller than whether you used enough.
If you take one thing
Stop optimising the number and start measuring the amount. For one week, apply what you think is right, then apply that much again. It will feel like too much on about day two, and by day five it will feel normal.
That is the entire intervention. It is not interesting, there is nothing to buy, and it is the single change in this subject with the largest effect on what you are actually getting.
