Vitamin C is the ingredient I get asked about most and the one where people are most often disappointed for a reason that has nothing to do with their skin. They bought a good molecule in a format that had already stopped being that molecule.
There is genuinely strong groundwork here. Ascorbic acid is an essential cofactor in collagen synthesis — that is textbook biochemistry, not a cosmetic claim. It is an antioxidant. There is reasonable evidence, summarised in Telang's 2013 overview, for effects on pigmentation and for a supporting role alongside sunscreen against photodamage.
All of which is only relevant if the stuff arrives intact.
The three numbers that actually matter
Pinnell's absorption work in 2001 is the paper most of the practical rules trace back to, and it produced three findings that between them explain almost every disappointing vitamin C purchase.
pH below roughly 3.5. L-ascorbic acid is charged at neutral pH and does not cross the skin barrier in useful amounts. Drop the pH and it becomes uncharged and absorbable. That is why proper L-ascorbic acid serums are aggressively acidic and why they can sting slightly. The acidity is not a potency signal — it is the entry requirement.
Around 20 percent is the ceiling, not the target. Absorption rises with concentration up to about 20 percent and then plateaus. Above that you are paying for a bigger number and, fairly often, more irritation. A 30 percent serum is not one and a half times a 20 percent one. It is a marketing number.
It leaves slowly. Once absorbed, tissue levels persist for a while, which is the rationale for once-daily rather than twice.
The problem nobody prints on the box
L-ascorbic acid is chemically unstable in water. Exposed to oxygen, light and warmth, it oxidises — first to dehydroascorbic acid, then onward to compounds that do nothing useful for you. You can watch it happen: the serum goes from clear or faintly straw-coloured to yellow, then amber, then brown.
By the time it is properly orange, you are applying an oxidation product. The percentage on the label describes what was put in at the factory. It makes no claim about what is left in month four of an opened bottle sitting on a warm bathroom shelf.
This is the single most common reason someone tells me vitamin C “did nothing”. It probably did nothing. It was no longer vitamin C.
Practical consequences, none of which cost anything:
- Opaque or dark glass, air-restrictive packaging. A clear dropper bottle is a display case for a light-sensitive molecule.
- Buy small. A bottle you finish in two months is worth more than a large one at the same price per millilitre.
- Keep it out of the shower room if you can. Heat and humidity accelerate it.
- Colour is your assay. Straw is fine. Amber means it is going. Brown means it has gone.
What about the derivatives
Because pure L-ascorbic acid is difficult, the industry developed more stable relatives: magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl glucoside, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and others.
These are genuinely more stable, and they can be formulated at a skin-comfortable pH, which makes them a reasonable option if the acidic version is too much for you. Stamford's 2012 review is the useful place to compare them.
Here is the honest caveat. A derivative has to convert to ascorbic acid in the skin to do the ascorbic acid job, and the evidence on how efficiently each one does that — in human skin, at cosmetic concentrations, in a finished formula — is considerably thinner than the evidence for the pure form. Some are better characterised than others. Very few have the equivalent of Pinnell's absorption work behind them.
So the trade is real: more stability and comfort, less certainty about conversion. That is a legitimate trade to make. It is not the same thing as equivalence, and any brand telling you their derivative is “as effective as, but gentler than” L-ascorbic acid is asserting something the published data does not currently support.
What I would expect, realistically
Over eight to twelve weeks of consistent use of a serum that is actually intact: a gradual evening of tone, and modest improvement in pigmentation. Used alongside daily sunscreen, a supporting contribution to photoprotection — supporting, not substituting.
What I would not expect: a change in fine lines you could pick out in a photograph, or anything you would notice within a fortnight. And I would not buy vitamin C as a wrinkle treatment. The collagen-synthesis biochemistry is real, and the leap from “required cofactor” to “visibly firmer skin from a topical serum” is a leap the evidence has not made.
The short version
Buy a small bottle, in packaging that keeps light and air out, at 10 to 20 percent if you tolerate the acidity or a well-formulated derivative if you do not. Use it in the morning, once. Replace it when it turns amber, not when it runs out.
And judge it at twelve weeks, on an intact bottle. Judging a serum that oxidised in week five is not judging vitamin C.
