Most skincare ingredients are perfectly fine together. Only a handful of pairs genuinely clash, for one of two reasons: an oxidiser breaks down a fragile active, or two strong actives stack irritation when they land on the same night. Pick two ingredients above to see which of those applies, if either, and what to do about it.

I built this because "what can I not mix" is one of the questions I get most, and the answers online swing between two extremes. One says every active needs its own day. The other says nothing matters. The truth is a short list, and it is worth knowing exactly what is on it.

What skincare ingredients should not be mixed?

These are the combinations where there is a real reason to keep things apart. Almost everything else in the checker comes back as fine.

Chemistry versus irritation

It helps to know which kind of problem you are dealing with, because the two call for different responses.

The chemistry problems are about one ingredient destroying another, and benzoyl peroxide is the main culprit. Martin and colleagues showed this plainly in 1998: when a tretinoin gel was mixed with a benzoyl peroxide lotion and left in light, more than half of the tretinoin had broken down within about two hours, and 95 percent within 24 hours. Adapalene, a more stable retinoid, held up in the same test. Retinol is also easily oxidised, and vitamin C is an antioxidant whose whole job is to be used up by oxidisers. Layering either with benzoyl peroxide means paying for an active that is gone before it does anything.

The irritation problems are different, because nothing is destroyed. Retinoids and exfoliating acids both speed up how quickly the outer layer of skin turns over, and both can sting. Separately, your skin may tolerate each one well. On the same night, the effects add up. That is a question of pacing rather than a hard rule, which is why the checker says "better at different times" rather than "never".

Can I use vitamin C with retinol?

You can, but there is little reason to put them on at the same time. L-ascorbic acid needs a very low pH to get into the skin, as I explained in the entry on vitamin C, and a retinol on top adds stinging without adding anything. Vitamin C also earns its place in the morning, as an antioxidant under sunscreen, while retinol breaks down in light and belongs to the evening. The split does itself.

Is the niacinamide and vitamin C warning a myth?

Largely, yes. The concern comes from older laboratory work in which the two were heated together, which can produce a compound that makes skin flush. In a bottle at room temperature, and on your face for the few minutes before both are absorbed, that is not a practical problem. Niacinamide is one of the gentlest well-studied ingredients there is, and I went through what it actually does in the niacinamide entry.

What about prescription retinoids?

If tretinoin or adapalene has been prescribed to you, the instructions that came with it take priority over anything general, including this checker. It will still show you what is known about a combination, but the conversation about what to add belongs with whoever prescribed it.

Can I use niacinamide with vitamin C?

Yes. The warning comes from old laboratory work in which the two were heated together, which can form a compound that makes skin flush. At room temperature, in the formulas you actually buy, that is not a practical problem. If your face does flush when you layer them, simply use vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night.

Can I use salicylic acid with retinol?

Not on the same night, at least to begin with. Both speed up how quickly the outer layer of skin turns over, and both can irritate, so together they tend to leave skin dry and stinging. Alternate evenings, or use the salicylic acid in the morning with sunscreen and the retinol at night.

What should you not mix with benzoyl peroxide?

Retinoids and vitamin C. Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidiser: in laboratory testing it broke down more than half of a tretinoin gel within about two hours in light, and it uses up vitamin C in the same way. Keep benzoyl peroxide for the morning and the more fragile actives for the evening.
